Black pearl decreases attack power

When I equip the black pearl, my attack power is decreased and the sword does way less damage than advertised. There is no mention of this effect on the item. So, unfortunately the sword that only does 12.6 dps comes out better than the black pearl which is 14 dps. Let me know if there is something I'm missing.
