Well first of all that has nothing to do with crappy parenting. Second, i believe the word $hit is only bad when used in a derogatory manner. For instance "You little $hit head" is not good. "Oh $hit, that cat just pwned me" should be allowed.

Well considering in an online chat system theres no way to distinguish the intention of words used, not happening. And logically ridiculous none the less.

Best to drop the subject before you draw anymore negative attention toward yourself.

This has everything to do with bad parenting as any GOOD parent would let it be known that using the word you're using in any fashion is frowned upon by general society. Sure, you joke around with your friends and use it which is great but you don't interact with complete strangers, business partners and general high society by using that word.

You can argue if about it if you like but that's the way the world works.

I think we should try to refrain from using those words anyways. If people have parents like mine, this game would be empty (from the parents not allowing it). You wouldn't go to a basketball court where kids play and smoke would you? Well, some people might, but I wouldn't. Just having "Hell" and "Damn" are bad enough. The problem is, this thread is called "Swearing Enforcement". When the people do swear and go over board, sometimes it is not enforced, they don't get warned and they keep going, thinking it is funny or something. There are more mods, but still, I think we should be a little harsher on swearing. It gets innocent kids in trouble and takes away gems.

LOL I greeted BeanKing in game by saying, "hi Beaner," and I got a slap on the wrist for using inappropriate language, and was kicked off the server.

Now that is just silly.

You know, I also have to totally disagree with you...There are plenty of really famous authors & poets who use curse words quite skillfully...it is considered an art form...D.H Lawrence is quite well known for having used the F-word frequently in his work. Unfortunately wikipedia also lists world famous authors such as James Joyce, Henry Miller, Lenny Bruce, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, in their Derek and Clive as all having their works banned for obscenity when they were first published because of usage of curse words (the bans have since been lifted). Now, in my opinion, the real crime here is censorship of these world renown authors, NOT the cursing itself. However, before you reply...Yes, I do understand that FO is not art, it is not creative writing, it is not a place for authors to write their next novel. So if people want to play, they just have to follow the rules and just deal with it. My point was not to dispute these rules or the FO policy...I just wanted to contest this point that you made that using swear words is necessarily evidence of bad parenting...bad parenting has nothing to do with it as I've shown by the numerous and respected authors who creatively and artistically use these words in their works all the time...
context is everything...
there are no absolutes.

On another note, I kinda do share the sentiment of the person who said they were afraid after reading this thread...Sometimes I curse without even realizing it because it's such a part of modern everyday usage for most people. As much as people don't like to admit, the vast majority of adults use swear words in everyday language and it's very hard to try and stop since for most people it has become a subconscious thing that they just do ... Case in point, I just had to go back and recheck/edit some of my old posts just to make sure, because I too, do it subconsciously...and sure enough I found some words that might have been construed as borderline (I played it safe and edited them out)...Anyway, I'm not afraid about consciously swearing, because I would never do that in the FO chat, I'm more afraid of SUBconsciously swearing...because habits are a very hard thing to break...and in the hypothetical case that I accidentally swear and then catch myself, I can totally see myself going "Oh **** I didn't mean to curse"..." Oh, NO! **** I did it again" "AAAAHh, I didn't mean that!" Lol.

For people whom swearing is part of everyday speech, it's a hard habit to break...I don't think the vast majority of people mean to break the rules, I just think they do it without even thinking because they are so used to speaking that way, it's like trying to hide one's accent (if u have one) eventually something is going to slip...with that in mind, I like the idea of mute/ignore or just having the words "starred" out...definitely don't permanently ban anyone unless it's chronic and egregious. On the other hand, racist, homophobic, sexist, etc. type comments are usually consciously spoken with intent and meant to cause insult to another person or group of people...these types of comments I have no tolerance for.

Wow...didn't mean for that to be so long!
